There are so many beauty products on the market, so knowing what you really need versus those added nice-to-haves can be overwhelming. Whether you are trying to save yourself some time in the morning or trying to save money, we thought we’d help you out and sift through all those products to reveal the real make-up essentials.
As long as you’ve got these in your kit, you’re good to go…
Your top 10 make-up essentials
1. Sun protection
This is an incredibly important product to add to your make-up kit, even though it’s not strictly speaking a make-up product. To make sure you’re getting your sun protection without any added hassle, you could opt for a make-up product, like a moisturiser, primer or foundation, that has a high enough SPF (at least 20) in it.
Ahhh — the masker of all evil! Ok, that may be slightly dramatic, but foundation does hide a multitude of skin sins, and because of this, no beauty kit should ever be without a decent foundation. We recommend testing a few before you commit to one as, depending on your skin type and the coverage you’re looking for, you may opt for a liquid or powder option, or even go for something extra light, like a BB cream or tinted moisturiser.

If you’re really lucky, you might not need to use this product every day, but this little gem comes in super handy after a sleepless night (thanks, kids!) or when those pesky hormones cause a break out. Be sure to select the right colour for your complexion, and spend a little bit of time ensuring you’ve blended it into your skin and foundation properly.
This is every woman’s secret weapon, and one of those make-up essentials we couldn’t do without! The wonders that a lick of mascara can do for your face is unlimited, making you look wide awake, glam and effortlessly ‘done’ in an instant. Select the type (volume, lengthening, thickening, etc) depending on your lashes and personal preference, and remember to change your mascara about every 3 months.
This is another definite must-have! It’s quick to apply, defines the eye in an instant, and is super versatile; you can create anything from a subtle eye line to a va-va-voom cat-eye. Just remember that while black is often the go-to colour, it can be extremely harsh on light skin tones, so consider opting for a charcoal, drown or even a navy one instead.
6. Neutral duo eye shadow palette
If you’re in a rush, this is the step you can do without, but having some fab eye shadows can really make your eyes pop. Once again, the choice of palettes are endless, so to keep things simple, go for an eye shadow duo, that way you’ll get the darker colour for your crease, and a lighter colour for the rest of the lid. Choose a colour that you’re comfortable with so that you won’t be scared to use it; something in the bronze or copper family is generally a safe bet.
Giving your cheeks a light dusting of blush really finishes off a look while giving you definition on your cheekbones. Be sure not to go overboard, though, you want a slight glow and a bit of definition, as opposed to looking like you’ve just run a marathon!
8. Neutral lipstick or lipgloss
This is one of those make-up essentials you should keep this in your handbag at all times – you’ll be surprised at the confidence boost a touch of lippie can give you! Whether you pick a stick or gloss comes down to personal preference, and pick a colour that you’d feel comfortable rocking every day – you can always add brighter shades to your collection at a later stage.
While the range of tools out there are endless, if you’re just starting out or want to keep your kit to a minimum, you only need a few brushes. We recommend starting off with the following:
- Foundation brush or beauty blender
- Powder brush and/or blush brush (you could interchange these)
- Eyeshadow brush
Keep in mind that, more often than not, buying a set of brushes works out cheaper than buying them individually, so look out for a set that contains all the basics. We also recommend having a good pair of tweezers in your kit to keep those eyebrows on fleek!
10. Make-up remover
It’s important for your skin that you get all your make-up off properly, so keeping some remover in your kit is a win. Wipes are generally the most convenient and they remove the make-up as well as moisturise the skin, plus they help in those moments when you get a bit carried away with one of your fab brushes!
