Ponytails are no longer just for little girls! We wanted to inspire you to find a ponytail that will suit your mood and style. And challenge you to be brave enough to shake things up (with a little help from our friends at ghd).
From loose, tousled waves to super straight tresses, here’s how you can take your traditional ponytail to the next level in just 4 easy steps.
ghd’s power pony
Step 1: Split your hair into two sections – a top half and a bottom half – using the tops of your ears as a guide. Clip the bottom half away. Brush your hair to the back of your head, keeping in line with your cheekbones, then smooth the top over with a ghd oval dressing brush. Pull into a tight pony and secure with an elastic at the crown.
Step 2: Take the loose section of hair from underneath the ponytail, and create another pony by brushing up the hair tightly and securing it to the top ponytail with a second elastic. Now, spray ghd final fix hairspray on the palms of your hands and smooth down any pesky flyaways for a sleek look.
Step 3: Take a section from your ponytail and wrap it around the two elastics to hide them, then secure with a pin underneath the pony and one last spritz of hairspray.

The boho ponytail
Step 1: Section the hair in line with your ears into three sections. Backcomb the middle section using a tail comb and then twist back to create a subtle bouffant.
Step 2: Braid the remaining two sections. Be sure to hold your hands up at an angle as you plait, so that it will be easier to add the braids into the ponytail later.
Step 3: Gather the rest of your hair into a loose high pony and secure it with an elastic. Now, take the two braids and wrap them around the pony, one at a time, to hide the elastic.
Step 4: Braid a section of the pony into a loose plait, then secure the end with a mini elastic, or lightly tease the loose ends to keep the plait in place. The extra braid will give your pony a carefree, fun finish. For extra hold, be sure to use some hairspray.
A grown-up half pony
Step 1: Prep hair with a light spritz of ghd curl hold spray to give your curls long-lasting hold. Working one section at a time, you can either create loose curls with your curling wand or use your hair straightener – here’s a quick tutorial from ghd:
Step 2: Wrap the curl around your finger and secure it with a pin to set it – do this with each section. By giving your curls time to set, you’re making sure that they’ll last longer throughout the day. But, if you’re running short on time, you can skip this step.
Step 3: Once all the hair is curled, pinned and cooled, unpin each section and brush through with a paddle brush to create tousled, textured waves.
Step 4: Section off the top of your hair, using your ear as a guide, and pull into a tight high pony. Secure with an elastic and let the hair in the pony fan out for a grown-up but glamorous half-up style.
