We all know how it goes… You invest a lot of time and money into getting healthy hair, only to ruin it by constantly using heat – depending on hairdryers, flat irons and curling wands to add some bounce and body to your hair. But, there are other ways to create healthy, wavy locks full of body and life.
So, in an effort to liberate ourselves (and you) from the vicious heat-styling cycle, we tried out three ways to get gorgeous curls without using heat!
How to get heat-free curls – 3 foolproof techniques to try:
Headband technique – For boho-chic curls on medium-to-long hair
Step 1: Brush your hair into your desired parting and spritz with water. Then, place a headband (or two for extra support) around your hair – over not under! If your hairband rides up and creates a bubble on top, tug on the bottom hair to create a smooth top.
TIP: Choose medium-width bands for better results, and avoid gym sweatbands at all costs.
Step 2: Pin the hairband down at the back for extra support and part your hair into two. Start at the front of your hair, twist your first section tightly away from your face. Then, tuck your twist up and over around the headband, repeat the up-and-over movement until your first twisted section is wrapped around the band. Repeat until all your hair is twisted and wrapped around the headband.
Step 3: Spray liberally with hairspray. Leave it to dry for an hour or speed up the process by using your hairdryer on the cold air setting.
Step 4: Once dry, gently unwrap your twists, and separate the coils with your fingers. Warm up some texturizing product in your hands and scrunch upwards into your hair.
Fingerling technique – For a beachy twist on longer locks
Step 1: Divide your hair into two sections. Select a small section, about 3cm, starting from the nape of your neck. Dampen this section using your spritzing bottle.
TIP: Spritz each section as you curl and NOT all at once.
Step 2: Place one or two fingers (depending on how loose you want the curl) midway down your section, and begin to wrap the hair below around your finger(s). Secure the twist in place with a clip. Repeat until all your hair is pinned.
Step 3: Spritz your hair with hairspray and blast it with your hairdryer on the cold setting. Leave for an hour, or until all the hair is completely dry.
Step 4: Undo the twists and gently style as desired with your fingers.
Braided technique – effortless but oh-so-pretty
Step 1: Treat your hair with a leave-in conditioner or nourishing oil, or just dampen it with your spritzing bottle.
Step 2: Split your hair into two sections (or more if you would like tighter curls) and Dutch braid your hair. A Dutch braid is like a French braid, except that you braid under not over. Secure with an elastic band and repeat until all your hair is braided.
Step 3: Go to bed – the more time your hair remains braided, the better. If you’re in a hurry, blast with some cold air until completely dry.
Step 4: Take out your braids and loosen up with your fingers. For extra body and bounce, use some texturizing spray. We told you it was effortless!
