Introducing our new health and beauty series with Margaret Roberts and her daughter Sandy Roberts. You’ll get tips, advice and simple recipes on how to easily make your own brilliant DIY beauty products.
Here’s how to make your very own lipstick!
The annatto plant (or Bixa Orellana) is a large, shrubby, colourful tree that can reach 3 to 4m in tropical areas. It is sensitive to cold and the leaves are deciduous, large and heart shaped.
If the seeds are crushed when still soft, they produce a bright orange-red juice much loved by young girls who carefully spread it on their lips as a natural lipstick, hence its Hawaiian name of ‘Lipstick tree’.
How to grow your own:
- Propagation is from fresh seed sown in bags to mature.
- Dig a large hole in full sun, fill with compost and water and sink the small tree into it when it’s about 60 cm tall (the plants grow rapidly, so it shouldn’t take too long).
- Make sure all the roots are well covered with compost — be careful not to bend the taproot — and make a sturdy dam around it.
- Once a week, flood the dam with water and your plant should thrive, flowering after about 18 months.
If you want to grow your own lipstick tree, Margaret will post the seeds directly to you!
Let’s get planting, then read part 2 in the series to see what else you can do with your lipstick tree.
