Fashion rules help to mould a woman’s style, shopping habits and overall fashion acumen. And while some of these fashion rules may be outdated and should really be abandoned, while some will definitely save you from making a fashion faux pas that you might regret later.
Knowing which fashion rules you should follow and which you should ditch will give you the confidence to show off your personality through your style. Whether it’s the latest crazy trends or wearing white from head to toe, these updated fashion rules will definitely help save your look.
Wash all your clothing often
Ditch this rule. For most clothing, this is what you should be doing. But for denim specifically, we’re going to have to say ditch this rule. Over-washing denim can lead to your jeans losing their shape, colour, and even affect the integrity of the fabric itself. So skip a load (or two) and simply air out your jeans overnight.
Invest in the basics
This is certainly a fashion rule you should keep. Investing in classic closet staples means you will have countless outfit combinations, long-lasting clothing, and you can pretty much dress most basics up or down.
What should you invest your money in? A pair of flattering jeans, a classic black blazer, a killer pair of court heels and a crisp white shirt. Spend a little bit more on these four items and you’ll be wearing them for years to come.
Underwear is not important
False! Ladies, contrary to popular belief, underwear is the building blocks of any outfit. Companies like Ackermans know this well. Their new campaign #IAmMe aims to give beautiful underwear to everybody, while also flattering and enhancing your shape, too.

Don’t follow every trend
In the fast-paced world of fashion, this is one of the fashion rules you should definitely stick to. Not every trend is going to work for your body, style or budget, and that’s okay. Use your discretion about the longevity of the trend and try it on before you commit to buying it.
Bright colours are only for slender women
Ditch it. Don’t be scared to embrace colour, no matter your size. The most important thing to remember is to dress according to your body shape. Then it won’t even matter what colour clothing you’re wearing.
Learn to thrift like a pro
This is a must-try. We highly suggest that you take some time to visit a few great thrift shops and have a look. They often have hidden gems at ridiculously low prices. From designer items to international brands, you’re bound to find something you like at a fraction of its original price. Just be sure to wash and tailor anything you get.
Certain colours shouldn’t be worn together
Ditch this rule. This is definitely an old concept that fashionistas are breaking and you can do the same, too. All it takes is just a little finesse. You can either anchor your outfit in a neutral colour; wear cropped jeans with a navy top and a black blazer. Or play with textures to explicitly show you paired the two colours on purpose. And lastly, add a little confidence and your good to go.
Comfort is key
This rule should never go out of style. If wearing heels is not for you, then don’t wear them. Opt for a pair of versatile sneakers instead. Not one for tight dresses? Then ditch that kind of look for fun, floaty dresses. Do what makes you pretty, comfortable and confident, and you’ll always look your best.
Forget about the size on the label
Yes, say it again! Don’t fall victim to any perceived stigmas surrounding sizes. Rather try on multiple sizes in an item you want to buy, and find one that fits you the best. You’ll soon find that almost every store has their own measuring system. Whether you’re a size 6 or 44, try everything on first so you’ll choose the right fit.
Never wear all-white
Ditch this rule. You’re really missing out if you believe that white will make you look larger than you actually are. Like any other colour, the most important thing is to dress for your shape and remember your silhouette. If you can master this, you can wear any colour, even head-to-toe white.
