Whether your man rocks socks with sandals or loves gaudy t-shirts, you CAN dig him out of his style rut. Three readers shared their concerns over their partner’s style, and we gave them advice on how to execute a male makeover.
He’s so scruffy!
The problem: His go-to outfit is well-worn jeans, old t-shirts and running shoes — worn with an unflattering fleece when it’s cold.
Our advice: Your man needs to smarten up. There’s nothing wrong with a t-shirt and jeans, so long as they fit well and don’t look like they came from a charity shop bargain bin. A lot of men think that smart tailoring is just for work, but they couldn’t be more wrong. A well-cut jacket smartens any outfit and couldn’t be easier to wear.
The male makeover solution: Kick the scruffy habit with quality tailoring. It’s a look that says ‘grown man’, not ‘umkempt teen’.
He can’t do casual!
The problem: His daily ‘uniform’ consists of dowdy chinos or suit pants with a button-up shirt. He has five pairs of the same black shoes and shirts in various shades of brown and black — he looks like he’s off to the office, even when he’s not!
Our advice: His idea of looking smart is characterless clothing and bland colours, but that’s so dreary and ageing. Swap his suit pants and chinos for dark-wash jeans and get him to buy a trendy pair of brogues that he can wear for work and weekend. Swap the collared shirts for a crisp white t-shirt or — if he absolutely can’t part ways with the work shirts — a collared shirt in a bright colour.
The male makeover solution: Swap his overly-smart outfit for a cool, less preppy look of jeans with a coloured collared shirt — it will instantly make him look more fun
He won’t wear anything other than sportswear!
The problem: He lives in baggy tracksuits and takkies, with a cap worn backwards because he wants to feel ‘comfy’. I’d love to see him wear something — anything — that you don’t go running in.
Our advice: Get him to try straight-cut jeans to show him how comfortable denim can feel. A fitted t-shirt will give him the comfort he craves and, as a concession to his love of all things sporty, he can wear it all with sporty hi-top trainers.
The male makeover solution: You can feel comfortable and look good at the same time. Experiment with fabrics that are soft against the skin, like linen, good-quality denim and 100% cotton.
