Whether you were up all night with a niggly toddler, or (gasp!) went out with your girlfriends until the early hours, there’s no denying that the morning after can take its toll.
We’re greeted with parched, pale skin and bleary red eyes. Luckily for you, there are plenty of beauty tips and tricks that will give the illusion you were tucked up in bed by 9pm. Here’s your step-by-step recovery plan to faking 8 hours of sleep.
1. THOROUGHLY CLEANSE
Old make-up is a dead giveaway that you’ve had a difficult night, so if you hit the hay before taking it off last night, it’s important to get rid of the evidence now!
Use cleansing oil to remove any traces of make-up, then follow-up with a creamy face wash that’s gentle on dehydrated skin. Use a muslin cloth or facecloth instead of just rinsing your face or follow up with a gentle exfoliator for a deep clean. Try Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse or Garnier Pure Active 3-in-1, Wash, Scrub and Mask.
2. DO A MINUTE MASK
It’s a good idea to add a minute mask to your beauty regime when you’re particularly busy or stressed. Perfect for mornings, use it as a pick-me-up while you’re in the shower. We love Ren Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial. Its high vitamin C content will help draw out toxins.
3. COOL DOWN EYES
Counter puffiness with this quick trick: put a cotton pad in the freezer for a few minutes, and then gently hold it over your eyes. The cooling action soothes puffy eyes. Follow with an eye cream rich in pro-vitamin B5 or B3 — both have anti-inflammatory powers to reduce eye bags. Try Clarins Multi-Active eye cream.
4. TIME FOR A MASSAGE
We know time is of the essence when you’ve hit the snooze button a few times, but massaging a serum into your skin is a great way to give a dull complexion a glow.
Place the pads of your thumbs under your cheekbones and gently push up. Do it six times and you’ll really get the blood flowing and bring life back to your complexion. If you tend to suffer from redness, pick a calming serum like Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer. Rose-based products can be very soothing.
5. SKIP FOUNDATION
You might be tempted to reach for your foundation, expecting it to hide a multitude of sins from last night, but what you really need are the colour-correcting pigments (hence the abbreviation CC) found in CC Cream.
Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream helps to create an even complexion and minimise the appearance of pores. Try mixing it with an illuminator to perk up your complexion even more. The ratio should be two-thirds CC cream to one-third liquid illuminator.
6. LINE YOUR EYES
If you don’t have any eye drops, don’t fret. You can still counteract scarily red eyes with a light, flesh-toned eye pencil on the inner rim of your eyes to help brighten them and look like you had a full night of beauty sleep. We like Essence Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Say Hi Light.
Follow with an illuminating under-eye concealer pen, such as Clarins Instant Light Brush-On Perfector, to help hide dark circles. Focus on your inner eye and over your eyelid.
7. GET CHEEKY
There’s one last step to looking fully at your best: a subtle was of blush. Opt for a creamy formula like Smashbox L.A. Lights Blendable Lip & Cheek Colour in Silver Lake Sunset – its dewy finish will make you look fresher, whereas powder can cling to dry, dehydrated skin.
Apply to the apples of your cheeks, gently blending in with your fingers for a natural finish. Be wary of going too bold though, it’ll seem like you have something to hide!
