It’s a new year, the perfect time for starting exciting projects and getting into good habits that you know you should’ve been practicing last year, but just never got round to.
Although we’re not big on new year’s resolutions — in fact, we wrote an article all about the new year’s resolutions we won’t be making this year — beauty resolutions seem to be a little easier to keep than resolutions that are all about deprivation and other general unpleasantness. Setting a few great beauty resolutions for the new year will mean you’ll look and feel even better — and most of them will take you hardly any time at all. Bonus!
Make these beauty resolutions stick by introducing a few at a time. Then when your resolution turns into a brilliant beauty habit that you won’t break, try another one. You’ll be a pro in no time.
1. Do a beauty audit
There’s no use keeping products that are five years old in your make-up bag, just like food, make-up expires and becomes less fabulous with age. If you haven’t used it in ages, you’re not likely to use it now, so chuck it and make room for some great new products.
2. Remove your make-up every night
It’s much more fun applying it than removing, isn’t it? Even though we all know we should take make-up off before bed, sometimes it just doesn’t happen. But this is one of the most important beauty resolutions to stick to because not taking it off clogs your pores and leaves skin undernourished and looking dull.
If you really struggle with this one, stock up on micellar water or make-up remover facial wipes that are quick and easy to use. We’ve even got a step-by-step tutorial that shows you how to make your own make-up remover pads.
3. Clean your make-up brushes
Most of us are guilty of this one — just think of all that build-up of foundation and eyeshadow from a year ago on those dirty brushes. Yuck! Wash them at least twice a month with make-up remover, make-up brush cleaner or even good old soap and water — it’s definitely better than nothing. While you’re at it, clean the rest of your make-up too.
4. Wear sunscreen every day, even in winter!
Your skin is still exposed to harsh UV rays in winter, so protect your beautiful skin by applying sunscreen daily (don’t forget your ears, décolleté and hands). It’s the number one way to stop premature ageing, and it’s so, so easy to do.
5. Exfoliate your face and body every week
Exfoliation and body brushing are great for blood circulation, which improves the natural glow of your skin and helps get rid of cellulite. Set a day that’s dedicated to exfoliating (we like Sunday) and make that skin shine. You’ll have no problem keeping this beauty resolution because it feels so good getting rid of all that dead skin and grime clogging pores.
6. Invest in a silk pillowcase
Not only will you feel like a princess sleeping on silk, there are many other benefits to slipping on a silk pillowcase: it helps prevent wrinkles on your face, reduces loss of hair oils and is naturally hypoallergenic.
7. Get 6 to 8 hours of sleep
It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing — slather on that night cream or overnight mask and let your skin regenerate while you sleeping. Not to mention the fact that you’ll feel great in the morning, too. If you struggle to sleep, check out our top tips for getting more sleep.
8. Take extra care of your hands
Between dishes and being washed a thousand times a day your hands take a lot of abuse. Wear gloves when doing dishes and gardening, keep hand cream in your bag and apply it regularly and use cuticle oil around your nails. Your hands will be in tip-top shape in no time.
9. Don’t forget your feet
Not everyone has time for a pedicure every few weeks, but there is something you can do to keep your feet looking fresh: apply foot cream every day before bed. This will help prevent rough, dry skin and keeps feet smooth. If you want to take your beauty resolutions a step further, exfoliate feet once a week and use a foot file on very rough areas. It will take 10 minutes, but makes a huge difference.

10. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new
If you usually wear full coverage foundation, try lighter BB cream for a day, switch your nude lipstick for a bright and bold shade or go for colourful or metallic eyeliner. Of all the beauty resolutions to make this year, this is our favourite; make-up is meant to be fun, and we say go for it!
