Just as our wardrobes change with the seasons, our winter skincare regimes should also change to keep our skin protected, nourished and radiant. Say no to dry, flaky or itchy skin by switching up a few of your regular beauty products.
1. Keep it clean
Winter is a dry time of year and your winter skincare regime should be laser focused on getting as much moisture into your skin as possible! So swap your gel or foam cleanser for an ultra hydrating one, like a milky, creamy or oil-based cleanser.
Cream cleansers make sure that your skin stays moisturised, while removing any traces of make-up and dirt. Try Vichy Purete Thermale Cleansing Milk, which is enriched with vitamin E and glycerine to offer your skin a hydrating antioxidant-packed treatment. Don’t worry, a cream cleanser won’t leave skin feeling greasy.

Our Beauty Editor’s winter cleansing tips:
- Think that ‘tight’ feeling you get after you wash your face means it’s extra clean? Think again, it actually means it’s extra dry. If your face wash leaves your skin feeling tight, you definitely need to switch to a creamy cleanser!
- Never wash your face with very hot or cold water, as this can irritate skin and cause damage. Always use warm water.
- Facecloths are difficult to keep spotlessly clean, and they’re notorious for depositing dirt back onto your face. A better option is usually just to use your hands, taking extra care not to apply too much pressure to the sensitive skin around your eye area.
- Once or twice a week, your skin will thank you if you treat it to a double cleansing. Start with an oil-based cleanser, like Lipidol Oil Cleanser, then follow up with a creamy cleanser. Double cleansing helps remove dead skin, make-up and excess oil, and it preps skin so that it can respond better to the ingredients in your moisturiser.
2. Get heavy
A light moisturiser might be fine for your skin during summer, but come winter, it’s time to bring out the big guns. Cold, dry air when you’re outside and warm, dry air when you’re inside can leave skin feeling tight, dry and irritated.
Protect your skin’s barrier by using a rich, heavy-duty moisturiser to soothe irritation and nourish your skin. If your skin really needs a boost, try a facial oil to keep skin soft and hydrated for longer. We love these three moisturisers to up our winter skincare game:
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream; The Body Shop Oils of Life Facial Oil; Ponds Age Miracle Day Cream SPF15.
3. Less is more
Dry winter skin needs exfoliation, but not as often as it does in summer. Try dialing back the number of times you exfoliate to once a week, and use a gentle exfoliator that has no harsh granules.
Clarins Gentle Refiner Exfoliating Cream has exfoliating and refining micro-grains that are gentle, but will leave your skin deeply cleansed. Or treat your skin with this Filorga Scrub & Mask for smoother and refreshed skin.
4. Winter skincare while you sleep
Upgrade your winter skincare cupboard with an overnight moisturising treat. Skip your usual night cream and use an overnight mask or treatment that delivers an extra boost of hydration while you sleep.
If you only use these a few times a week, they should last ages. Here are our top three nighttime hero products we love:
The Body Shop Drops Of Youth Bouncy Sleeping Mask; L’Oreal Extraordinary Oil Radiance Cream Mask; Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum.
5. Don’t focus on your face
While you’re looking after your face, don’t forget about your body! We love using body oil in winter as it’s quick to apply and absorbs rapidly. Apply it immediately after a bath or shower to really lock in moisture.
If you don’t want to ditch your body lotion, then mix a few drops of body oil with your regular lotion for an extra moisture hit. We dare you to try Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Body oil — not only is it a perfect winter skincare switch, but it also firms your skin and reduces the appearance of stretchmarks. Yes please!
If you don’t have time to slather on some body oil after a shower then you DEFINITELY need to change your soap or shower gel for an oil-based cleanser like Epimax bath oil. It’s seriously an all-in-one dry skin miracle worker.
6. Hands on
Hands can really take a knock in winter. And they often show signs of ageing before any other part of our bodies because they’re so neglected. In winter, our strategy to keep hands soft is to keep tubes of hand cream EVERYWHERE. And we do mean everywhere — the car, all your handbags, office drawer, next to the sink — basically, wherever you are, there needs to be hand cream. Your stringent hand cream strategy will also help keep nails strong.
If your hands are still suffering, our secret is to apply some SBR Repair Cream at night before bedtime. Literally developed to repair your skin’s barrier, it’s an incredibly rich cream that transforms skin overnight. But we don’t recommend using it during the day because it does tend to sit on top of the skin and it will make everything you touch slightly greasy.
