Mistake: Over-sized furniture
Often people forget to measure a room, and end up buying furniture that is too big for a specific area. Sometimes the piece of furniture can be too big for a room or doorway, and they even struggle to get their desired item into their home.
Solution: Save yourself a lot of money and headache by breaking out the tape measure and jotting down a room’s dimensions. Kate suggests measuring your space and getting the items custom made by a business that specialises in it like, Something Desired.
If you’re buying furniture from a store, then chat to the sales person to find out if the item is made up of a few easy to assemble pieces and not one cumbersome item.

Mistake: Poor Bedroom Lighting
There’s no need for a massive spotlight lamp in the bedroom that dominates your night stand.
Solution: Reduce the clutter by investing in beautiful soft pendant lights that hang from the ceiling by the bed. Other than providing a nightlight for bookworms, they make a nice change from a stereotypical lamp. When choosing bulbs, opt for a warm white that creates an ambient light and a gorgeous glow.
Mistake: Someone else’s kitchen cupboards
You’re dying to rip out those dated kitchen cupboards, but a kitchen overhaul is not in your budget right now.
Solution: Paint them. A fresh coat can easily update a tired look. Check the kind of surface you plan to paint on to find the right paint, but you can pretty much paint over anything – even laminated cupboards can bepainted if sanded correctly. With a little bit of elbow grease and the right primer, you’ll have a snazzy-looking kitchen in no time. “I even did this myself in this rich green,” adds Kate.
You also don’t have to feel like you’re stuck with the existing finishes. Break out the screw drivers and switch out an old set of door handles for something new. A fresh set of handles on cupboards or doors in any room can take the space from old-fashioned to stylish.
Mistake: Kids and their clutter
When you have little ones, your neatly styled home turns into a bright, primary colour explosion of plastic toys.
Solution: Don’t be afraid to want to keep your home as you like it. “Even as a mom, I’ve realised how important it is to have a beautiful trendy home that also offers the kids something they’ll enjoy.” Kate’s suggestion is to invest in kids items that you and the kids will love like this Bunny Table and Chair by Something Different.
Mistake: The wrong rug
Picking out a rug that’s the wrong size, shape and colour is an easy and common mistake to make.
Solution: There’s no point in hiding your rug under a couch where no one can see it, so make sure the rug fits the space where your feet sit in the living room. Bigger is normally always better.
“If your space is full of colour and patterns, go bold and simple. If the space lacks life, give the floor some prints and textures. Just be sure to get the floor area where you sit filled with softness,” says Kate.
