1 YOGURT Full of calcium, yogurt is an excellent belly fat buster. Any calcium in your diet will help you control how much body fat you have, but dairy is the most effective way to consume it, and both full and low-fat yogurt have plenty of calcium. A US study found that people on low-cal diets who included yogurt in their eating plans lost a whopping 81% more fat from their tums than those who didn’t.
2 ALMONDS Studies have shown that nut eaters tend to be slimmer than non-nut eaters. A trial involving people who were overweight found that replacing starchy carbohydrates (pasta, bread) with almonds meant they lost more weight.
3 SALMON The omega-3 essential fatty acids in salmon help prevent calories being stored as fat and may also increase cells’ production of heat, which means fat gets used up as fuel. Salmon also contains astaxanthin. The carotenoid that gives salmon its colour has the helpful effect of increasing the use of fat as an energy source and boosting fat-burning during exercise.
4 APPLES Eating an apple a day could not only keep the doctor away, but the pounds too, thanks to the fruit’s fiber.
Essential for digestive health, fiber binds to other foods and helps shift pesky calories out of the body. A US study found that those who ate an apple before a meal consumed 15% fewer calories during that meal.
5 EGGS Studies show that an eggbased breakfast helps you burn more fat and lose more weight than a highcarbohydrate breakfast such as toast or a bagel. Proteinrich foods like eggs take more energy to digest (burning more calories). Protein also takes longer to leave the stomach, so you feel fuller for longer.
6 BUTTER BEANS White beans like butter beans aren’t just healthy and nutritious low-GI foods that fill you up. Research shows adding them to a meal doubles the production of a hormone called cholecystokinin, which keeps food in the stomach for longer, reducing our appetite while we’re still eating and telling us when we’re full.
