Our March issue has just hit the shelves. On our cover this month we have the South African health and fitness expert Andene Thomson. She’s better known as @healthygirl_with_a_sweettooth to her thousands of Instagram followers.
Andene is an online trainer and health coach her main goal is to help empower women through a healthy and balanced lifestyle. She also stresses the importance of being kind to yourself.
And although she shares so much of her life with her #teamhealthygirl, we asked Andene to tell us about five things people don’t know about her.
1. She’s allergic to asparagus
Never really eating it as a child or even in adult life, she had asparagus as part of her meal one Christmas. Needless to say, she now knows shes allergic. It was so severe that she even had to have a shot of adrenaline. The doctor said that she was moments away from passing out.
2. She has a cool birthmark
Wherever she goes, she will carry a bit of Africa with her. Andene has a birthmark on her lower back in the shape of Africa.
3. She’s lived abroad
After completing school, Andene went to live in Melbourne, Australia, for two years. At the time, it felt like a very difficult transition. While friends of hers were going away to university, she had to adjust to the differences of life in Australia. While she was there, she completed a fashion diploma and began to love all the healthy options available. Cafes, gyms, just the way of life in general. Andene says “it’s like Cape Town on steroids.”

4. There’s a sweet treat for every day
Discipline and motivation are essential factors for Andene’s success. We’re sure many of her meals are planned and super healthy. But balance means having a few Woolies Chuckles or Giant speckled eggs to satisfy her sweet tooth.
5. Her mixed ancestry makes for easy travel
Andene is super grateful about having mixed ancestry. Her mom moved to SA from England when she was in her teens. This means that Andene is the owner of a British passport. It has made travelling for her WBFF (World bikini fashion and fitness) competitions a breeze.
Andene has also shared with us three of her favourite recipes. You can try them out, right here!
