Milestone birthdays are always a reflective time — often not leaving you feeling very positive. Nip the blues in the bud and set some positive, proactive goals for yourself. Here are 10 things to do before the big 40.
1. See the Big Five
We are all so incredibly lucky to live in a country where these great animals live in the wild. With more and more of our wildlife becoming endangered, there’s no time like the present to see these amazing creatures in an exhilarating safari experience. You need not blow the bank with expensive accommodation either — many places offer fantastic day excursions. Shop around and get planning.
2. Do something that scares you
There’s nothing like an adrenaline rush to make you feel alive! Go shark-cage diving, bungee jumping, paragliding or go on a roller-coaster. Whatever it is, just go for it!
3. Help a stranger without expecting anything in return
Buy a meal for a homeless person, help the man in front of you at the till who’s R5 short on his groceries, or drop pet food off at an animal shelter. Opportunities to lend a helping hand are endless.
4. Open a personal savings account
You never know what life is going to throw at you, so why not save, even if it is only R200 a month. You’ll be grateful you down the line…
5. Keep a diary
You might not think so now, but one day your children and grandchildren will want to read about your experiences. Whether you keep a journal for a month, a year or longer, it can become a personal keepsake. The sentimental value is priceless, and one which future generations will be grateful for.
6. Give yourself a complete hair makeover
Why not? It’s only hair. Chop it all off, try a new style, or dye it a different colour. Ask your stylist what would suit you before taking the leap! A change is as good as a holiday, they say.
7. Treat yourself to a luxurious indulgence
Book yourself into a ridiculously luxurious hotel and spa. Whether for a day or a whole weekend, treat yourself!
8. Learn something new
Cook a gourmet meal by taking a cooking class. Learn a new language, discover how to play the guitar, or how to salsa or tango! The opportunity to learn is all around you. Open your eyes and take advantage of new ways to learn and enrich your life.
9. Donate blood or become an organ donor
10. Get your dancing shoes on
Go to a live concert or music festival. Even if you’ve done this before, it was probably in your youth (right?). Go and lose yourself in the music.
