Spent a bit too much time outdoors soaking up those rays? Try these easy home remedies for sunburn and soothe your skin.
1. Say no to soap
Soap dries out your skin, making it even more irritated and inflamed. Instead of lathering up with soap, try adding a cup of white vinegar to your bath — make sure the water is cool and enjoy your healing soak in the tub.
2. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
That tingling feeling means your skin is damaged and needs extra TLC to repair. Use a rich, creamy moisturiser to soften and hydrate your skin — apply it as often as you can and your poor skin should feel relief in no time. For a more natural approach, you can also try slathering on some coconut oil mixed with soothing essential oils, like lavender, to lock in the moisture.
If your skin is feeling parched, your body probably is too. That’s because one of the major side effects of sunburn is dehydration. Drink lots of fluids, preferably water, to rehydrate your skin, keep healthy and help the burn to heal faster.
4. Use a cool compress
For instant relief, soak a cloth in cool water and apply it to the burn. For even more healing power, you can also add bicarbonate of soda or Epsom salts to the water, they’re both soothing ingredients and will help with itching. Or switch the water for full-cream milk or plain yoghurt, which both have soothing properties — just make sure you rinse it off afterwards.
5. Add some aloe
One of the best home remedies for sunburn might be in your garden! Pick an aloe vera leaf, give it a squeeze and apply the gel directly to the burned area. This healing plant helps to cool, decrease redness and soothe. If you don’t have any aloes in the garden, look for pure Aloe vera gel at the pharmacy.
And remember, the number one rule for treating sunburned skin is not to get burned in the first place. After all, although these home remedies for sunburn help heal your skin, there’s no way to reverse the sun damage once it’s done. So make sure you apply sunscreen every day, wear a hat and try your best to keep your gorgeous face out of the sun.
