On getting the part in 50 Shades of Grey… All I can say is, I’m going to do everything I can to portray Christian Grey as truthfully as possible. I might not please everyone — just me being cast doesn’t please everyone — but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.
On his greatest fear… I almost don’t want to put this out there, but I fear I’ll get murdered, like John Lennon, by one of those mad fans at the premiere of 50 Shades.
On those sex scenes… Anyone who thinks actors enjoy doing sex scenes is mistaken. There are dozens of hairy men standing round, moving cables and lighting equipment, and that’s just not sexy!
On staying in shape… I haven’t given up anything. My only vice is chips, but I can get away with that. I’ve never really found myself out of shape.
On his dad… My dad nearly studied drama. Instead, he became a doctor and had a very fulfilled life, but I think there was always a part of him that wanted to explore acting, so I think he’s probably as excited as I am that I’m doing it, because he gets to vicariously live that side of him.
On growing up… I was always young looking and my sister’s friends would say, ‘You’re so cute’. I hated that. If you’re a skinny, baby-faced teenager, the last thing you want to hear is that you’re cute.
On telling his wife about playing Christian Grey… A lot of people would have had a fit at 30-something weeks pregnant, hearing, ‘Darling, we’re going to Vancouver for four months — we’re going to have a Canadian baby and I’m going to do a film where, for parts of it, I will be naked.’ That’s
a tough pitch, but my wife is an incredible person.
