There’s nothing quite like sipping on a glass of your favourite red or white wine at the end of a long day (read: every day), feeling all your worries slip away with every sip.
And now we’ve done the necessary research to prove to you and your significant other that doing this is actually incredibly essential to your health* and that you should never again feel guilty for popping open that cork.
*Disclaimer: These health benefits are from having one or two small glasses of wine a day, not an entire bottle. We take no responsibility for the behaviour that occurs after this is done.
Here are 6 reasons why you should drink wine:
1. It helps slim down the waistline.
Say no more, right? Yip, there are actual scientific studies which show that people who drink wine daily (in a moderate manner) have a lower body mass, smaller waist and less abdominal fat than those who only indulge occasionally, or choose spirits over wine. Apparently, the alcohol could even encourage your body to burn calories for up to 90 minutes after you finish your glass. Yes please!
2. It helps keeps those pesky breakouts at bay.
Resveratrol is a bit of a super ingredient that exists in wine. It’s found in a variety of grapes and berries, hence its inclusion in wine, and fights bacteria and fungi in plants. When found in wine – particularly red wine – it can inhibit the growth of the bacteria that cause acne, and can even be more effective than some creams. This means that it could be beneficial for your wallet, too.
3. It’s a little bit like a natural toothpaste.
Again, resveratrol plays a role in this, as the antimicrobials help reduce the existence of bacteria on your teeth. Keep in mind, however, that red wine can also stain your teeth if consumed in excess, so keep your number of glasses per day on the lower side, and your pearly whites should be as good as new.
4. It makes sure your brain stays in the game.
Yes, drinking wine improves brain functioning and slows down the decline of brain activity. It also helps preserve your memory, making you an asset on those quiz nights, with resveratrol protecting cells from being damaged, and preventing age-related mental decline, meaning that wine can assist in preventing Alzheimer’s and even dementia from setting in.
5. It makes you live longer.
This, in turn, means you’ll be able to enjoy more wine in the long run (winning!). This is partly because resveratrol (there it is again) activates a specific protein which promotes health and longevity, and also protects the body from diseases linked to aging. This also has something to do with the fact that drinking wine can reduce the risk of infections, heart attacks, cardiovascular disease, strokes and certain cancers, to name a few.
6. It keeps you sane!
And how can it not when you know that drinking it will make you thinner, stop breakouts, give you pearly whites, make you extra smart and ensure you live a long, healthy life? Ok, so there may be a few other things that you need to do along with the glass or two of wine to make sure all of the above happens, but at least you can rest easy knowing that you’ve made a good life choice on opting for that glass of wine for a third night in a row!
