The Olympic Games not only showcases incredible talents from around the world, it also means that there’s ALWAYS something to watch on TV, no matter what time of day.
Imagine our delight upon learning that the iconic sporting event could make us laugh too? And not only because of the actions of some of the sports stars (read: the water bottle incident) but also because of the creative minds who have jumped on board generating memes, pictures and tweets of the funniest Olympic moments that have had us giggling for days.
Here is our pick of the top 10 funniest Olympic moments
It was minutes before two swimming legends would battle it out in the 200m butterfly semi-finals. USA-born (and part dolphin) Michael Phelps looked less than amused when SA’s golden boy, Chad le Clos was monkeying around in front of him. If looks could kill, we may have had to bid ol’ Chad farewell. As expected, the internet erupted with a series of memes, quotes and tweets where the public took it upon themselves to interpret what Phelps was thinking. Here are 4 of our favourites…

2. The Irish brothers
We’re not sure what we ever did before Gary and Paul O’Donovan, the mumbling Irish brothers who took home silver for a rowing event at the Olympics. Their interviews are nothing short of hilarious — not only because of their chilled out demeanor, but because you’re barely able to understand one word they’re saying!
From the below interview we gathered only the following: the one brother is excited about his podium pants, they saw, or spoke to their mom and dad, they had to pee in a cup, they’re hungry, something about SnapChat and that they’re bummed they’re not able to party it up with the rest of their country because they’re well, the ones competing. If there’s anything else you can make sense of, do tell!
If you haven’t watched this video yet — stop everything and do it NOW. It’s the most important thing you’ll do all day.
3. The uniform incident
This was nothing more than two people being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and unfortunately for them, someone was quick enough to capture one of the funniest Olympic moments. Two men on the German field hockey team with surnames ‘Butt’ and ‘Fuchs’ were photographed almost too perfectly standing side-by-side which subsequently read:
To the delight of the internet, which, of course didn’t hold back…
4. The green swimming pool
You can imagine that people had a field day upon discovering that the diving pool had turned a murky green colour. According to the Rio 2016 Local Organsing Committee, the change in colour was due to a proliferation of algae caused by the heat and lack of wind in the venue. Yummy. They also reassured the world that it was of no harm to the athletes but decided to close the pool, in case?
5. Ryan Lochte’s hair turned green
And it wasn’t just the pool that turned green during the Olympics, but USA swimmer Ryan Lochte’s hair as well. Frankly if you’re going to peroxide your hair you kind of deserve it, but if we’re being honest, we still find him wildly attractive!

6. The chest bump
If there was an Olympic medal for awkward moments, we think this moment between these 2 Canadian volleyballers would win by miles.
7. The bored lifeguard
Assigning a lifeguard to the Olympic swimming pool seems a little redundant considering the world’s best swimmers are in the pool. So if by some chance one of them has an incident, we’re pretty sure the rest of the swimmers are going to get to him first. And we’re not the only ones who thinks so — the internet went wild when a picture emerged of said life guard looking like the most miserable human alive, and a magnificent tweet was born:
8. The water bottle
Clearly competing in the Olympic Games is tough! So tough that you don’t have time for silly things like remembering how to drink out of a bottle. We can’t stop watching this clip of the Australian women’s soccer team. There’s something so mesmerising about it…
9. A winning smile
The world was of course routing for the fastest man alive, Usain Bolt to win the men’s 100m over the weekend. As the race started it became evident that USA’s Justin Gatlin was a force to be reckoned with and at one point it looked like he would beat out Bolt for the gold. Apparently it was all part of the Jamaican’s plan, because in the last few metres he kicked it up to turbo before crossing the finish line — but not before posing for a photo — as if to mock the world for ever doubting him!

10. Fu Yuanhui finishes third
The world fell in love with Chinese swimmer, Fu Yuanhui, whose goofy personality and infectious smile made the Olympics even better to watch. Fu competed in the finals of the women’s 100m backstroke at the Rio Olympics and came in third, but had no idea. It was a television host who broke the news to her and her reaction was priceless!
This video also includes some of her other hilariously adorable (and totally relatable) moments.
