Game of Thrones season 6 is over, but we can still pass the time by thinking back on all the great moments the series has brought us — which is why we’re celebrating with this list of great things that we wouldn’t be able to enjoy if it wasn’t for the ultra-popular TV series.
Warning: There may be some mild spoilers in this post, so if you’re just starting out on your Game of Thrones watching journey, maybe save this for once you’re all caught up.
Something everyone can talk about
Whether you love Game of Thrones or hate it, everyone at least knows what it is or has an opinion about it. This can be really useful for filling any awkward silences when you get stuck in the lift with that weird guy from accounts (‘Sooooo, are you looking forward to the new season of Game of Thrones?’ is the new ‘How about that weather!’).
Yes, yes, it may be shallow, but we don’t care. Game of Thrones has brought a whole host of incredibly good looking men and women to our attention. We’d like to focus on Kit Harington aka Jon Snow for a second, and say, thank you Game of Thrones. We had never heard of him before the show started and now we can’t imagine life without his smoldering eyes and perfect curls.
The show has also spawned hundreds of (we think) hilarious memes. There are so many, we think Game of Thrones memes deserve their own post entirely, but for now, here are a few of our favourites:
This is somewhat related to the memes, but some of the quotes that Game of Thrones has generated are so brilliant we thought they deserved their own point. Some of our favourites include:
“Money buys a man’s silence for a time. A bolt in the heart buys it forever.” — Peter Baelish
“The next time you raise a hand to me will be the last time you have hands!” — Daenerys Targaryen
“It’s not easy being drunk all the time. If it were easy, everyone would do it.” — Tyrion Lannister
“There is a beast in every man and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand.” — Jorah Mormont
“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” — Ned Stark
Pro tip: Try working these quotes into everyday life, it’ll definitely make a day in the office more lively.
Blood stirring theme song
Not only is the actual show the best, but even the intro is unmissable. It’s been proven that just humming it gives you the power and confidence to achieve your goals (not really, but we bet it’s true). The Game of Thrones theme song is so epic it’s even spawned its own cult following on the internet, with hundreds of people doing covers and singing its praises (literally). There’s even a video of a cat doing a cover. And here it is:
Pro tip: Wondering whether someone is a REAL Game of Thrones fan? A real fan would NEVER skip the intro.
The death of Joffrey
People love to moan about the fact that no character is safe from being killed off in the series. Although it can be completely devastating when your favourite character dies in a horrific way, let’s not forget that George RR Martin also gave us the satisfaction of seeing the worst person ever to be on a screen die.
Strong female characters
Love them or loathe them, the female characters in Game of Thrones are nothing if not strong. They’re complex, they’re well-rounded, they’re conniving, they’re ruthless, they’re clever and they often run circles around the men.
Days off work
Okay, so this is not something we’ve actually experienced ourselves, but a UK company is giving its employees a half day off work the day after the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere. This forward thinking company knows that their workers will be up all night watching the first episode, so they’ve given them the morning off. Which other TV series has ever done that?
It’s restored our faith in TV
Just when we thought no TV series would ever surprise us again, Game of Thrones came along and basically just kept surprising us episode after episode. Sometimes those surprises are horrific, but they’re surprises nonetheless.
A way to know if someone is awesome or not
And finally, it’s an easy way to tell if someone is awesome or not. If they like Game of Thrones, they can stay, if they don’t, just no.
