You’ve probably heard about IV therapy, especially since it’s been such a hit with local and international celebrities alike. Tried and tested by Madonna, Rihanna, Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as local celebs like DJ Fresh, AKA, Casper Nyovest and Lalla Hirayama, and now our very own Beauty and Health editor, Adila Jallal. Adila decided to visit REVIV, South Africa’s first ‘drip bar’ to see what all the fuss was about…

What is IV therapy?
A hydration treatment administered through an IV containing a fluid mixture of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, amino acids & anti-oxidants.
In addition to tackling fatigue, jetlag and correcting your body’s hydration levels, there is also an appeal to skincare lovers – the treatment can be taken to make you look more youthful and refreshed – need we say more?
Who’s it for?
Anyone who lives a particularly fast-paced life, with long hours and very little time to focus on their wellness – think athletes, people who travel a lot for work or even those who have extremely stressful careers.
Adila’s experience of getting the Royal Flush
I arrived at REVIV’s headquarters in Sandton on a full stomach. Then, I answered a few questions regarding my medical history – any allergies, chronic medication or underlying conditions such as hypertension – this information is important to disclose so that the trained medical staff can determine if the treatment is suitable for you.
REVIV offers five treatments: Hydromax, Ultraviv, Megaboost, Vitaglo and the Royal Flush. I was going to have the Royal Flush – a combination of Megaboost, Ultraviv and Vitaglow. This means I would be getting the vitamin recovery and anti-ageing infusion all in one.
First, I was hooked up to a litre bag of yellow fluid containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids, electrolytes and antioxidants – all the good stuff. It was time to sit back and relax for the next 45 minutes. Something was entering my body through a vein, so there was some discomfort, but it’s nothing you won’t be able to handle with a smile… Just like I did!
Top Tip: Wear a dress or pants that don’t need to be zipped up just in case you need to head to the loo. You’re welcome!
Then, came the second bag of fluid, clear this time, containing anti-ageing ingredient Glutathione. This one is administered separately as the less saline it’s mixed with, the more effective it is.
Twenty minutes later, it was time for the part I was dreading – the vitamin B12 booster shot – which is not actually a part of Royal Flush, but I decided to get the full experience at REVIV. Besides boosting your immune system and natural energy levels, the shot also helps to regulate your sleep, mood and appetite cycles. And the injection does burn a little (as some of you may already know).
I didn’t feel any different by the time I got back to the office, but around 30 minutes later, a mild headache had vanished and I went about the rest of my day as usual. Then, at 5 pm, it hit me – I am usually sleepy and dreading the fact that I need to go to a 5:30pm gym class, but on this particular day, I was rather excited for my workout.
After the gym, unlike most evenings, I was up way past midnight. But after eventually falling asleep and having to be up in just a few short hours, I woke up energised and ready to tackle the day.
The treatment left me feeling revitalised and considerably less run down. With a price tag of R2 999, it is expensive and definitely not something anyone can afford to do on a whim. But, the next time you feel like booking a spa day for some R&R, maybe treat yourself to REVIV’s Royal Flush instead.
