We’re in our fourth week of the nationwide lockdown, and who knows how much longer. And while the grocery stores have remained open for members of the public to buy their essential goods, you may be feeling the need to minimise even those trips. If that’s how you are feeling, there are many options for you to do your essentials shopping online.
It’s been great to see that over the lockdown period, businesses who first thought that they would have to close are now able to open up again. Local bakeries and gourmet delicatessens are all getting the chance to supply us with essential goods, and also increase the possibility of them making it through these unprecedented times.
Our list includes the grocery stores we all know and love, but we’ve included some smaller businesses to who are running order and collect facilities. We’re all in this together, and with your support, these businesses will make it through.
Apart from being able to deliver your food and home essentials to your door, Yuppiechef has also partnered with Cape Town-based suppliers to deliver fresh goods boxes. Delicious items like sourdough bread, fruit and veg as well as cured meats.

Checking the Woolies website daily might be a good option, due to the influx of online orders they have had to close the delivery option to some areas. Recently they have also introduced a click and collect option, which allows you to shop and pay online and then just go in-store to pick your groceries up.
A great website to use if you’d like to get shopping done at multiple stores. Shopping with one cart allows you to do that. Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Clicks, Dis-Chem and many more. The site compiles all your different orders and delivers them straight to your door.
Everyone’s favourite fruit juice brand has been placed on the list of essential services. You can now order your favourite juices, smoothies, health shots, cordials, iced teas and even fresh fruits to be delivered to you. Fresh fruits are great at helping to strengthen your immune system, and Sir Fruit can make that easier for you with their wide range of delicious beverages. Simply place your order over Whatsapp and be prepared to enter into fruity bliss when your delivery arrives.
There’s no end to the ingenuity of smart South Africans. Premium ice-cream makers Pauls Homemade Ice-cream are also now doing essentials boxes. Order from them and receive boxes with cute names like ‘we shopped so you didn’t have to’ – which contains items like eggs, coffee, fruit, veg and cheese. And because we’re certain it would be a crime not to, add some ice-cream to your order too. Orders are taken over Whatsapp or DM on Instagram.
