In case you haven’t heard, Mariah Carey is in South Africa treating SA audiences to her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour.
And apparently Mariah has a few things to say about how things look around South Africa — particularly the colour of Table Mountain. She’s reported to have suggested that it would be nice if Table Mountain was lit up in purple during her Cape Town performance. Although we can’t confirm just how true this is (since she’s not taking our calls), we can definitely believe it based on a few of the other things she’s been associated with over the course of her career.
Here are 10 of our favourite Mariah Carey diva moments:
Determined her babies be born with a taste for success, Mariah had a live version of her hit song Fantasy played during the birth of her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, in 2011. Apparently it was so they ‘could hear the applause as they entered the world’. Interesting…
Mariah wasn’t pleased when the producers of an indie horror film she agreed to appear in told her she’d have to fly economy. Rather than kick up a fuss, she just booked out all the economy seats and travelled alone in the cabin. Well if you have to fly coach!
Even a serious injury won’t stand in the way of Mariah’s glam style. After she dislocated her shoulder while shooting the video for ‘Beautiful’, she rocked a range of slings covered in fur, feathers, diamonds, satin, and studded leather. We admit, we’ve saved this idea just in case we ever have to show off our sling style.
Most of us are forced to accept our increasing age, but not Mariah. She refuses to acknowledge her birthday and has dodged questions about her age with a firm: ‘Darling, I’m eternally 12 years old’. Even the all-knowing Wikipedia has her birth year listed as a mysterious 1969 OR 1970.
When Mariah starred in a commercial with her dogs, not only did she have an enormous entourage, but her pooches had their own people too! “My puppies are starring in this ad with me, too. I had my team with me but the pups had a mini entourage of their own, of course! And why wouldn’t they?” When asked if this made her seem like a diva, she replied with “The shoot was based on the fact that some people think I’m a demanding diva. I have no idea why people have that impression!”
When she signed up to judge American Idol, Mariah wrongly assumed that she would be the only woman on the judging panel. Cue continual bickering as she had to sit next to another of the world’s biggest divas, Nicki Minaj. And in case you think the feud was invented by the media — “That was the worst experience of my life,” Mariah later claimed.
According to Kate Garraway, Mariah refused to sit down on the GMTV couch without assistance when she appeared on the show in 2009. Fearing she’d crease her dress, she insisted that two ITV producers help lower her onto the couch. She also had an assistant walk backwards in front of her in case she fell.
After divorcing hubby number two, Nick Cannon, Mariah became engaged to billionaire James Packer. The star announced her recent engagement in dazzling style by flaunting an epic diamond, reported to be 35 carats — “It’s so heavy,” she said, “I can’t lift my arm up!”. The rock is said to be bigger than Kim Kardashian’s and Beyoncé’s engagement rings combined.
ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT
According to her rider, Mariah Carey is not a fan of “busy patterns” and “doesn’t do stairs”, but the star took diva demands to the extreme when she requested 20 white kittens and 100 white doves be released while she turned on the Christmas lights at London’s Westfield shopping centre. We like kittens as much as the next person on the internet, but we’re as relieved as you that the request was denied. She did, however, still get to be showered with butterfly confetti at the end of the event.
DIVA IN DENIAL
The best thing about any of these requests and behaviours is that Mariah seems completely oblivious that things like flying her dogs FIRST CLASS across the US or asking to be carried around because her sky-high heels hurt her feet are anything but perfectly reasonable “I am baffled, shocked and appalled when I am called a diva. I’ve never done one diva-ish thing in my life. The actual definition of a diva is a woman who sings well. The secondary definition is a woman who is difficult to deal with. I hope I am the first, but I really don’t think I am the second. I don’t believe I am truly nasty and act in a bad way.”
