The gorgeous women of South Africa are on a roll when it comes to nabbing awards – our very own Mrs South Africa, Candice Abrahams, recently won the title of Mrs World 2016. And how stunning is our new Miss South Africa, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene? Well done ladies! With all the talk about pageants, we couldn’t resist revisiting some of the funniest beauty pageant fails. You’re welcome.
‘Ok folks… uh, I have to apologise’
Where better to start our trip down memory lane than with the most epic beauty pageant fail in recent history? Yes, we’re looking at you Mr. Steve Harvey. Basically the host announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, as Miss Universe 2015, when Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the actual winner. After his mistake was ‘rectified’, there was an even more awkward moment where Gutiérrez had to hand the crown over to Wurtzbach. CRINGE!
You know that emotional, photo-worthy moment when the new contestant is crowned by the last year’s winner? Well, that didn’t happen here. After much excitement and a fair amount of jumping up and down, Miss Universe 2008 basically threw the crown onto the 2009 winner’s head.
We had to include at least one on-stage fall, and bless, Rachel Smith may have been a little bruised after this Miss USA slip, but she jumped back up quicker than she fell down – and her smile didn’t falter once.
‘Uh, South Africa and Iraq…’
It was the year 2007 and Miss South Carolina, Caitlin Upton was asked: “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map — why do you think this is?” to which she responded by saying something incoherent about South Africa, Iraq and Asia. At least, that’s what we think she said?
‘We need to create education better…’
When Miss Utah was asked to give her opinion on why women still earn less than men, she stumbled through her answer so much so that at one point she seemed to give up and, instead of trying to fill the silence, she just flashed the audience a brilliant smile. Awkies.
