Working from home is sweet: you don’t spend time or money on travelling, you have control over your schedule, and you get to choose what your office looks like.
But it can be difficult to separate your work and home lives. Here are 5 ways to make your space work friendly:
1. Divide and conquer
Rule number one is to establish clear physical boundaries between your workspace and the rest of your home. If you can dedicate an entire room to your office, then plan the room so that it is functional and conducive to work.
If you are working in a shared space (like your living room), make sure that it is clutter-free, quiet, and set physical boundaries such as a rug and bookcases. This will not only stop you from taking your home to your work, but also from taking your work home.
2. What will you be doing in your office?
It’s important to figure out what you will be doing in your home office to make sure that you have adequate space, furniture and tools for your work.
Make sure you have the necessities – the items you’d use daily – and consider “outsourcing” things you don’t need each day to save space and money.

3. Invite them over!
If you will be getting frequent visits from colleagues or clients at your home office, ensure that the meeting area is quiet and tidy. If your home isn’t suited to meetings, have a list of co-working spaces or work-friendly coffee shops that you can go to.
4. Ergonomics is everything
When you design your home office you might have gorgeous mood boards as inspiration, but cosy chairs might not be that comfortable when you’re pushing eight hours a day.
Make sure that you have a proper, sturdy chair to sit on, a desk that is at the right height, and a computer setup where you don’t strain anything (carpal tunnel syndrome sucks).
5. Good lighting
You need good lighting in your office. While it might seem cosy to have candles and muted light, your eyes will take strain. Make sure that there is either sufficient natural light (that doesn’t glare on your screen) or that there is good artificial lighting for your workspace.
